The family of a 17-year-old girl identified as Elizabeth have been thrown into mourning after she drowned while trying to fetch water from a river for domestic use in Koropka, a suburb of Minna, the Niger State capital.
According to the Leadership, the people of the Koroka community have been living without pipe-borne water due to ongoing construction works in the community
Consequently, the residents of the community depend on the river for water.
A resident of the area, Zakari Lambata, said that the teenage girl, her sister and some residents of Koropka went to the river to fetch water on Saturday, March 8, 2025, when the incident happened.
“The elder sister of the girl ran to me to help search and rescue her drowning sister. It took almost an hour of searching before the body was recovered by some youth in the area. This is an urgent call to the government and the company to find a way of restoring water supply to the people, so as to avoid more casualties. As the river chanchaga is the major source of water to the people since the water supply from the water board is cut off,” he said
