Independent Candidacy Bill Passes First Reading In Nigerian Senate

The Independent Candidacy Bill, which is sponsored by Senator Abba Moro, representing Benue South Senatorial District and serving as Senate Minority Leader, passed its First Reading in the Senate on Thursday.

The Bill seeks to, among other things; Make provisions for Independent Candidacy in the electoral process in Nigeria.

To create a platform for credible and eligible candidates desirous to participate in the electoral process in the country to so do without sponsorship of a political party.

To make provisions that allow anyone who’s eligible to stand for election to any political office as an independent candidate.

The Bill, if passed into law, will address the worry of eligible aspirants for political offices who have no platform to run or unjustly denied party tickets.

Recall that Senator Moro introduced the bill in the 9th Senate but could not scale through the legislative processes for presidential assent before the expiration of that senate, hence the re-introduction in the 10th Senate.
