How I Dealt With Armed Robbers, Kidnappers For 31 Years As Vigilante Operative – Security Director, Ukachi

Chief Uchechukwu Jude Ukachi, the Chief Security Officer of Awada Central Landlords Association in Awada Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, and Director of Jufuso Security Agency—a police-registered security outfit—has shared his experiences in tracking down criminals who have terrorized Anambra State from 2006 to the present.

In an exclusive interview with Vanguard, Ukachi shared how he collaborated with law enforcement to combat crime and dismantle criminal gangs, including those involved in armed robbery and kidnapping.

He recalled a pivotal moment in 2006 when, alongside the then DIG Operations, Mike Okiro, he helped arrest miscreants who had burned a police Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) at Okpoko and snatched a service pistol from the then Onitsha Police Area Commander, ACP Matthew Uyanna.

Between 2009 and 2010, Ukachi was instrumental in apprehending gangs responsible for high-profile kidnappings, including Chief Godwin Ubaka Okeke, Chairman of GUO Motors Limited; Chief Emma Bishop Okonkwo, Chairman of Ekulo Industries Limited; and Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s father. His efforts also led to the recovery of a significant cache of arms and ammunition.

As the Chief Security Officer of Awada Landlords Association, Ukachi issued a stern warning to criminal elements, including the Special Anti-Touting Squad (SASA), who allegedly extort residents. He vowed to rid Awada of crime and ensure the safety of its residents.

“All criminals are hereby warned to steer clear of Awada,”
he declared. “We want a peaceful environment where responsible residents can live without harassment, intimidation, or extortion.”

Ukachi also condemned a recent invasion by SASA and Agunechemba Security Squad, which allegedly resulted in property destruction, the seizure of security equipment, and the abduction of vigilante operatives. He called on the Anambra State government to intervene, urging authorities to release the detained vigilantes and return seized assets.

Reflecting on his 31-year career, Ukachi detailed numerous arrests of armed robbers and kidnappers. He disclosed how his operations led to the dismantling of criminal networks and the recovery of weapons, including AK-47 rifles, General-Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), and rocket launchers.

Despite his contributions, Ukachi lamented the lack of recognition from law enforcement agencies. He recounted how a ₦15 million reward promised by then-Governor Virgy Etiaba was allegedly withheld by a senior police officer.

In 2011, after years of service, he withdrew from active security work, citing threats to his life. However, in 2024, he was called back to duty by the Awada Landlords Association to help restore peace in the community.

Ukachi expressed concerns over the activities of SASA in Awada, accusing them of extorting residents. He recounted a recent confrontation where residents of Orsumoghu Street clashed with SASA operatives over alleged illegal arrests and extortion.

“When my men inquired about their actions, the SASA operatives became aggressive,”
he stated.

Ukachi reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring Awada remains crime-free and vowed to stand firm against criminal elements. He concluded by emphasizing his pride in his service, stating that when he retires, he will walk the streets with his head held high, knowing he contributed significantly to the safety of Anambra State.
