FG Considering Sourcing For Funds To Refurbish Lagos Airport

The Tinubu-led Federal government is considering sourcing funds to refurbish the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.

Keyamo made the announcement on Monday, March 3, while addressing reports that misrepresented his remarks at a stakeholders’ forum held in Lagos on February 28.

A report had suggested that President Bola Tinubu was not focused on concessioning the airport but was instead seeking funds for its redevelopment. However, Keyamo clarified in a post on X that while the government is working to secure funding for rehabilitation, the concession process remains an option.

“This headline is not a reflection of my speech at the Stakeholders’ forum held in Lagos last Friday,” he said. “What I said is that the federal government is considering sourcing for funds to totally refurbish the Lagos International Airport. The model of funding is yet to be finalised, but even if the Federal Government invests its own funds in rehabilitation, it does not stop the concessioning of the airport for the purpose of proper running and management.”

Keyamo had previously stated on May 27, 2024, that the government was reviewing the airports’ concession process to ensure transparency. He also noted that his ministry was working on a master plan for major airports across the country.

“The president has approved the review of the concession process of the major airports to make sure they operate at international standards,
” he said.
