A Boko Haram faction led by Bakoura launched a deadly assault on Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) camps in Abadam Local Government Area, Borno State, resulting in the deaths of multiple top commanders and at least 31 fighters.
According to a post on the page of security analyst Zagazola Makama, the attack began in the early hours of Friday targeting ISWAP strongholds at Toumbun Gini and Toumbun Ali.
The assault, which lasted for hours, saw Bakoura-led fighters using multiple waterborne vessels to overrun ISWAP positions.
Sources cited in the post confirmed that several high-ranking ISWAP commanders, mainly from the Buduma ethnic group, were among those killed.
One of the slain commanders was allegedly involved in the massacre of farmers in Kukawa between January 12 and 13.
The Bakoura-led fighters reportedly seized weapons and equipment before retreating.
“Boko Haram killed more than 31 ISWAP fighters, but there could be more,” the source stated.
Following the success of the attack, JAS fighters from Boko Haram Island are said to be mobilizing for further assaults on ISWAP positions in Gemu and Mallam Karamti.
