Onuigbo, who was kidnapped in front of his house in Nnewi while returning from work on Tuesday was released in the early hours of Thursday, January 23, after spending two nights in the hands of his captors.
His colleagues at the Urology Department of the hospital and the Head of Corporate Affairs of NAUTH, Martina Onwuka, confirmed his release.
It could not also be ascertained if any ransom was paid before his release or whether he escaped from his captors.
One of his colleagues in the Urology department, who spoke to journalists on the condition of anonymity also confirmed the development.
“We thank God that he has been released and we are not yet sure if any ransom was paid or not. And we cannot also confirm if he was hurt or not but there is nobody that will go through such a harrowing experience that will be unhurt. The psychological trauma is enough hurt than bodily injury but we thank God that he has reunited with his family. We thank God for saving his life,” he said.
Spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga also confirmed the doctor’s release.
