Federal University Lokoja Announces Resumption of Academic Activities Following End of Protest

Students of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) have been ordered to resume academic activities.

This comes after the Senate of the university approved the reopening of the institution, effective Tuesday, March 11, 2025, after a three-week closure triggered by student protests over fatal road accidents near the campus.

This was contained in an official statement issued on Monday by the university’s Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Rebecca Okojie.

“The Senate has approved the reopening of the university with effect from Tuesday, March 11, 2025, and lectures will commence fully on Monday, March 17, 2025,” Okojie stated.

She further disclosed that the decision followed an emergency Senate meeting convened to review the situation and ensure a safe learning environment for students.

To address students’ concerns about road safety, the university administration has engaged in discussions with relevant stakeholders, including state authorities and road safety officials.

The university was shut down following demonstrations by the Students’ Union, who expressed outrage over the deaths of five students in separate road mishaps.

The protests led the school authorities to suspend academic activities to prevent further escalation.
