A Nigerian lawyer, Fatima Sule has recounted her experience with a man who brought his wife to change her maiden name and her signature.
The lawyer explained that the man came with his wife and asked for affidavit to change her name at the bank. He insisted that his wife removes her father’s name and puts his.
The lawyer narrated how the man kept speaking over his wife, acting like she wasn’t there. However, when the lawyer told the man what was required, including the financial cost, he remembered his wife was there and turned to her to pay.
After payment was made and the affidavit drafted, it was time for the new wife to sign. When the husband saw her signature and noticed it included her maiden name, he also insisted she changes her signature too.
The lawyer said she intervened and asked the man to let his wife keep her signature but he insisted she changes it too.
“No! Can’t you see her father’s name is in that signature? She has to remove,” the husband insisted, according to the lawyer.
However, when the lawyer told him the financial implications of that, he grudgingly allowed the wife to keep her signature.
