Felix Sughter Nyikyaa, a fresh student of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Markudi, Benue State, has been reported dead after he drowned in the River Niger.
The President of the National Association of Benue State Students, Ashar Lubem, who confirmed the incident to Punch said that Felix went missing on Sunday, February 9, 2025.
Lubem disclosed that after several searches by rescuers, the student’s body was found floating by the river bank on Tuesday, February 11.
“The incident happened two days ago (Sunday) and rescuers searched for him. His body was found this morning (Tuesday). We are still looking into the situation to know maybe it was a case of drowning or he was killed because his body was seen floating by the river bank,” he said.
Lubem said that even though the circumstances that led to his drowning could not be ascertained, the student association was working on contacting the family.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of the student, and we mourn the loss of a young and promising life. The student’s passing is a tragic reminder of the fragility of life, and we are reminded to cherish every moment we have with our loved ones.
“We also urge all students to be mindful of their well-being and to seek help if they are struggling with their emotions or if they need support. The university is here to support you, and we want to ensure that everyone has access to the resources they need to thrive,” he added.
A student, Tsekaa Amos, noted that the deceased was supposed to be among the matriculated students on Monday before the unfortunate incident.
