Akinmayokun Awodumila, the Nigerian singer, who is popularly known as May D, has recounted his experiences with with Psquare and Davido.
The Afropop singer revealed why he rejected a contract with Square Records, a music label owned by the R&B duo Psquare.
May D disclosed that during his collaboration with the duo, he lived in the boys’ quarters of their house, a setup he felt did not reflect personal or professional growth.
He expressed that a more suitable arrangement, like having his own room or flat, would have been a clearer indication of genuine support.
He also recalled an encounter he had with Davido, who once sought accommodation help with him while avoiding his father and unable to stay in hotels.
In an episode of The Honest Bunch podcast, shared on Instagram on Tuesday, January 14, May D said: “If I sign an artist who’s already successful, there are many things I would put in place for them. It doesn’t have to be a house, but at least something fitting.
“For instance, they could have given me a room in the vacant section of their house. I didn’t mind living in the boys’ quarters, but I was thinking of my future. How could I stay in the boys’ quarters and sign a contract?
“A flat wasn’t too much to ask for. I started reflecting on my life when people visited and questioned my situation.
“During that time, David was running from his dad. He told me, ‘Guy, I might have to stay at your place because my dad has blocked me from all hotels in Nigeria.’ I suggested we go to Psquare’s house.
“I told him he could stay in my room, but when David saw the room, he was shocked and said, ‘May D, is this really where you live? I can’t stay here.’ If I had a proper room, it would have been a different story.”
