The majority of Lagos State House of Assembly members have confirmed that the impeachment of former Speaker Hon. Mudashiru Obasa followed due process.
The Lagos High Court in Ikeja earlier on Friday adjourned the suit filed by Obasa, challenging his impeachment.
Justice Yetunde Pinheiro has scheduled March 7, 2025, to hear multiple applications submitted by various counsels involved in the case.
Obasa was removed from office on January 13, 2025, over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of power.
His impeachment resulted in the election of Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker of the House.
The defendants in the suit include Speaker Meranda, 34 other lawmakers, and the House of Assembly itself.
Speaking on behalf of the lawmakers who support Speaker Meranda, Hon. Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode addressed journalists after the court session on Friday.
“We have made our position clear, and in due time, the truth will be revealed for everyone to see,” he said.
Addressing the controversial sitting held by Obasa in the House on Thursday, Ogundipe said: “We are very clear on this matter. Let me also take this opportunity to appreciate the press for standing with what is right. You all saw what happened there—it was a show of shame. “Even when questions were raised, the responses given were neither logical nor in line with legal procedures.
“How could he claim to still be Speaker when the court proceedings are ongoing? He was the one who took the matter to court in the first place. And yet, you saw the drama, even from his lawyers. It is very unfortunate. But when we get to the bridge, we will cross it.”
When asked about the number of Assembly members supporting Speaker Meranda, Ogundipe confidently stated, “As we speak, we are 35.”
Speaking on Obasa’s alleged forceful entry into the Speaker’s office and the Assembly chambers on Thursday, he said, “I won’t speak on behalf of the party, but I know that the party is taking necessary steps in response. We are consulting with our leaders, and all rightful actions will be taken.
“But let me assure Lagosians that we remain committed to our party, our leadership, and, most importantly, to serving the people of Lagos State. That is our primary concern. We are law-abiding lawmakers, and we are handling everything within our power in a responsible manner.”
When asked what action would be taken if a similar incident occurred again, he responded, “We pray it does not happen again.”
On the official position of the House, Ogundipe reaffirmed: “Madam Speaker has spoken. The House will reconvene at the appropriate time. When it is time, we will be invited, and all necessary procedures will be followed accordingly.”
