Wisdom Odey, a 20-year-old man, has been shot and killed by gunmen during a robbery at Jeddo community in the Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of February 24, 2025. According to reports, Odey spotted the robbers from his window as they attempted to break into the house. He alerted his younger brother, and together they tried to hold the door shut.
However, the armed intruders forced open a small gap in the door and fired a shot into the house, hitting Odey. Despite his injuries, he resisted the attackers but eventually succumbed to his wounds.
A family source, who confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters on Friday, said after gaining full access to the house, the criminals transferred N250,000 from Odey’s mobile banking app.
They also stole 11 mobile phones that were charging due to a power outage — Odey’s house was the only one with a running generator in the compound.
The source said, “Wisdom was killed during a robbery that took place on the last Sunday night into Monday morning of the last week of March.
“During the robbery, Wisdom saw the intruders from the window as they attempted to force open the door to their house. In an effort to prevent them from entering, he called his younger brother for assistance, asking him to help hold the door shut.
“As the robbers continued to push their way in, they managed to create a small opening in the door. From that gap, they fired a shot into the house, and the bullet struck my brother. Despite his injuries, he tried to hold on, but he eventually succumbed to his wounds.
“Before he died, the robbers gained full access to the house. They forcefully entered, transferred N250,000 from a mobile banking app, and stole 11 mobile phones that were being charged in the compound, as neighbours often relied on a single phone-charging point.”
A security source who spoke with SaharaReporters revealed that investigations into the bank transaction showed that the stolen money was transferred to a PalmPay account.
Further tracing of the account linked it to a previous financial transaction tied to a prison facility in Warri. This suggests that the recipient of the stolen funds is an inmate who may be coordinating robberies from behind bars with the help of accomplices outside the prison.
“Upon investigating the transaction, it was discovered that the money was transferred to a PalmPay account. Further tracing revealed that the same PalmPay account had been linked to a previous financial transaction originating from within a prison facility.
“It appears that the recipient of the stolen money is an inmate, likely coordinating criminal activities from behind bars. He may have a network of individuals outside the prison who carry out robberies, after which he receives the stolen funds and distributes shares to his accomplices.”
A senior community chief also confirmed the man’s tragic death to SaharaReporters.
“Yes, the incident happened. I was not told, but I got to know on the second day that the incident happened. Details surrounding the incident remain unclear, but investigations are ongoing,” the chief said.
The Delta State Police Command has stated that it is unaware of the alleged incident in the community.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Edafe Bright confirmed that the authorities had reached out to the community, but no one had reported the incident.
“The community has been contacted, and nobody is aware of the incident,” Edafe said.
